OrSense Receives Technology Innovation Award for Continuous Non-Invasive Glucose Monitoring System
Nes Ziona, Israel, Dec. 5, 2006 – OrSense Ltd. today received a technology innovation award from Frost & Sullivan for its NBM-200, a non-invasive monitor of blood glucose and other analyte concentrations. NBM-200 is based on “Occlusion Spectroscopy”, OrSense’s proprietary technology. This breakthrough technology enables continuous non-invasive measurement of blood glucose, hemoglobin, hematocrit, oximetry, and pulse rates with very high sensitivity.
Blood-glucose monitoring plays a key role in the treatment of diabetes, where frequent measurement is essential in managing the disease. There is a dramatic increase in the incidence of diabetes in recent years, leading to large numbers of patients who require a simple, comfortable glucose measurement method, in order to comply with the difficult self-monitoring regimen required to maintain health while living with diabetes. However, the usual invasive method for the measurement of glucose, based on frequent finger pricking, is highly uncomfortable and is not feasible to implement frequently, calling for a non-invasive alternative. OrSense’s non-invasive blood glucose measurement technology is therefore poised to provide a dramatic improvement in the quality of care, and quality of life, of people with diabetes. According to Frost & Sullivan, the market for glucose monitoring is estimated at $US 7 billion and is expected to reach over $US 12 billion in 2010.
“We are honored to receive Frost & Sullivan’s 2006 Technology Innovation Award. Our first generation non-invasive continuous glucose monitor has been tested on over 350 people, exhibiting comparable accuracy to invasive solutions, while providing superior ease of use and safety. The device is expected to be submitted for regulatory approval during 2007, and to enter the market in 2008,” said Lior D. Ma’ayan, CEO of OrSense. “The next generation monitor, currently under development, is designed for improved performance and greater ease of use. It will enable any person with diabetes to self monitor his or her blood glucose levels, in a continuous or intermittent mode, throughout the day, within their normal lifestyle,” concluded Mr. Ma’ayan.
Frost & Sullivan, an international consulting firm that tracks the medical device industry, recognizes companies that demonstrate excellence in their industry, commending the diligence, commitment, and innovative business strategies required to advance in the global marketplace. Frost & Sullivan’s Technology Innovation Award is bestowed upon companies that have carried out new research, which has resulted in innovations that have or are expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. This award recognizes the quality and depth of a company’s research and development program as well as the vision and risk-taking that enabled it to undertake such an endeavor.
